Hitachi chips in

Hitachi Computer Products Inc. of Norman recently donated equipment to University of Oklahoma scientists with no strings - or wires - attached that could lead to helping the blind see and the paralyzed move. Hitachi gave OU’s Wireless Biological Sensor Group (WBSG) a mu chip evaluation kit so the scientists can study radio frequency chips. The package includes about 100 radio frequency identification chips and sample cards in which chips are embedded, along with a chip reader. Anadarko Petroleum Corp. donates $2.4 million mobile laboratory to OU

A state-of-the-art transportable research facility that is expected to significantly advance research in petroleum and gas core characterization has a new home at the University of Oklahoma. The $2.4 million Anadarko Mobile Core Laboratory was donated to OU’s Mewbourne School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering by Anadarko Petroleum Corp. of Houston.

OU radar records data from Charley

While Hurricane Charley thrashed trees and ripped apart homes in Florida, it also provided a perfect opportunity for meteorologists at the University of Oklahoma to crunch numbers and use their new Integrated Radar Data Service. “IRaDS is a program of the university and essentially it’s going to allow us to provide weather technical vendors with top tier, high resolution data,” said Joel Martin, a retired Air Force colonel meteorologist who now operates IRaDS at OU. Chain of Command: Eating out? Chances are it’s at one of Hal Smith’s restaurants

Hal Smith does not call his restaurant business “work.”  He calls it “living.”  And the founder of Hal Smith Restaurant Group has been living right for at least the last 30 years.  The Norman-based company owns and manages 35 restaurants in eight states, employs 3,000 people and posted a whopping $100 million in sales last year. Norman sees boom in development

Over the past several weeks, Norman's economic development efforts have been thrust into the spotlight as a result of the city's friendly competition with Oklahoma City to lure the customer care center that Dell Computer intends to build somewhere in the metro area. According to Don Wood, executive director of the Norman Economic Development Coalition, there are some interesting developments that are taking place in the suburb not just in terms of real estate opportunities, but with the city's corporate base as well. NOAA scientists examine microbursts with mobile radar

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientists will deploy a mobile Doppler radar in the Greater Phoenix Metropolitan Area during the next few weeks to learn more about the life cycle of severe thunderstorms that occur in the desert southwest. They will be searching and measuring storms that produce a very strong wind phenomenon called microbursts.

WDT and TOA Launch U.S. Precision Lightning Detection Network

TOA Systems Inc. (TOA), a leader in lightning detection technologies and Weather Decision Technologies, Inc. (WDT), a leader in weather prediction and forecast technologies, have partnered to build a state-of-the-science U.S. Precision Lightning Network (USPLN) that provides lightning detections over the Continental United States.

Westheimer gets $1,945,000 grant

Chickasaw Art and Culture on display at The Jacobson House

Opening August 29th, The Jacobson House Native Art Center will host an exhibit of Chickasaw fine art and culture. The event will showcase the Chickasaw peoples’ unique and beautiful way of life, both historically and in modern times. A joint collaboration between the City of Norman, the Norman Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Norman Economic Development Coalition has produced a blog for the City of Norman. Norman has a place in state aviation history

Norman has been at the forefront of the state’s aviation history, an Oklahoma Historical Society official said. Bill Moore, a producer and broadcast researcher with the society, outlined milestones in the city’s aviation history in remarks to the Norman Chamber of Commerce Aviation Committee. “I found three names in Norman aviation history that stand out,” he said: “Jimmie Haizlip, Mary Haizlip and Roy Hunt.” Courtesy of The Norman Transcript

OCAST proposal workshops most attended to date

The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Phase 1 development workshops held Aug. 10 and Aug. 11 at the University of Oklahoma set a record number of attendees. The Norman Economic Development Coalition and the University of Oklahoma Office of Technology sponsored the workshop.

A camera has been installed to capture the daily progress of One Partners Place on south campus. Weathernews Americas, the world's largest, publicly-traded, full-service weather company, will occupy 25,000 square feet of the 50,000-square-foot building.

Progress of the National Weather Center on OU’s south campus
A camera has been installed to capture the daily progress of the National Weather Center on south campus. The University of Oklahoma (OU) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are constructing the National Weather Center to provide a consolidated, state-of-the-art facility for research, operations, education, and training.
